Step by step

How to set it up

Install, configure, and start capturing.

1

Download the SKILL.md

We ship an OpenClaw-compatible SKILL.md with full API documentation, CLI reference, and SDK examples. Download it into your workspace or global skills folder.

# Workspace skill (this project only):
mkdir -p skills/screenshotdev
curl -o skills/screenshotdev/SKILL.md \
  https://screenshotdev.com/SKILL.md

# Or global skill (all projects):
mkdir -p ~/.openclaw/skills/screenshotdev
curl -o ~/.openclaw/skills/screenshotdev/SKILL.md \
  https://screenshotdev.com/SKILL.md
2

Set your API key

The SKILL.md uses OpenClaw's environment gating — it requires SCREENSHOTDEV_API_KEY to be set. Add it to your .env or configure it in OpenClaw.

# In your workspace .env:
SCREENSHOTDEV_API_KEY=ak_live_your_key_here

# Or via the CLI:
ssdev config set access_key ak_live_your_key_here
3

Start OpenClaw

OpenClaw loads skills on startup. It finds the SKILL.md, checks that SCREENSHOTDEV_API_KEY is set, and makes the full ScreenshotDEV API available to your agent.

$ openclaw

# screenshotdev skill loaded
> Take a screenshot of acme.com/pricing

OpenClaw runs:
  ssdev screenshot https://acme.com/pricing \
    --full-page --format json
Full example

OpenClaw session

> Screenshot our staging deploy and compare
  the header layout with production

OpenClaw runs:

  ssdev screenshot https://staging.acme.com \
    --selector "header" --format json

  → { "url": "https://cdn.ssdev.io/s/stg01.webp",
      "width": 1280, "height": 80 }

  ssdev screenshot https://acme.com \
    --selector "header" --format json

  → { "url": "https://cdn.ssdev.io/s/prd01.webp",
      "width": 1280, "height": 80 }

OpenClaw compares both screenshots:

  "The staging header has two differences:
   1. The logo is 2px taller (32px → 34px)
   2. The 'Pricing' nav link changed to
      'Plans & Pricing'
   Otherwise the layout is identical."

> Check our remaining quota

  ssdev usage --format json

  → { "used": 156, "limit": 1000 }

  "You have 844 screenshots remaining
   this month."

Pro tip: Put the SKILL.md in ~/.openclaw/skills/screenshotdev/ to make it available in every project. The SKILL.md includes the full API reference — sync, async, batch, PDF, signed URLs, and CLI commands.

Multi-page audits

Ask OpenClaw to screenshot every page in your sitemap and generate a report on visual consistency, broken elements, or dark mode issues.

Proof of state

Capture timestamped screenshots for compliance, legal archives, or before/after deploy records.

FAQ

OpenClaw + ScreenshotDEV — Common questions

What is OpenClaw?
OpenClaw (formerly ClawdBot) is an open-source AI agent that can run CLI tools autonomously. Skills are registered via SKILL.md files and loaded on startup.
Do I need to write my own SKILL.md?
No. ScreenshotDEV ships an OpenClaw-ready SKILL.md with full API reference, CLI commands, and SDK examples. Just download it into your skills folder.
Where do I put the SKILL.md?
Either in your workspace's skills/screenshotdev/ folder (per-project) or in ~/.openclaw/skills/screenshotdev/ (global). Workspace skills take precedence over global ones.
How does the environment gating work?
The SKILL.md declares SCREENSHOTDEV_API_KEY as a required environment variable. OpenClaw only loads the skill when this key is set — no key, no broken prompts.
Can OpenClaw compare screenshots visually?
If used with a multimodal model, yes. OpenClaw passes screenshot URLs to the model for visual analysis and comparison.
Is OpenClaw free?
OpenClaw is open-source. You bring your own model API key. ScreenshotDEV includes 100 free API calls per month.
